Week 8 and 9 of Adventures

Calista studied Benjamin Franklin and George Washington over these past few weeks.  Thanksgiving was in between so we detoured for a bit.  I was able to find so many of the recommended books at the library and in our own shelves (thanks to a dear friend).  Calista is fascinated with the Colonial Days and is always sharing her facts and findings with us.  She made both a Colonial Days and a Benjamin Franklin Lapbook on her own.

The Colonial Days Lapbook below had a number of flaps and models of their homes, foods and daily activities.  I was so happy to see her get excited and involved with this topic and her own learning.

She also did some baking from Felicity's Cookbook.  These little Breakfast Puffs were really easy to make and the girls enjoyed them.   I couldn't convince her to make the Chicken Pudding or the Beefsteak Pie.  Hmmm.

Right around Thanksgiving she received her state shoebox from a family in Kentucky.  She went through every item in the box and read it excitedly.  She loved the Kentucky Derby information because Ken had talked about it a lot already in the past.   She had worked for a while on her box which we sent to a child in Pennsylvania, so she appreciated all of the facts and information included here.

We have this great globe puzzle which really came in handy this week.  We needed a globe for Science and she remembered that we did in fact have one.   She enjoys putting it together so it worked out perfectly.

In Bible she learned more about Jesus as the Rock.  We discussed that if we listen to Him and obey Him we are building our house (our life) on the Rock.  She wrote about it in her journal and memorized the verse.  She also participates in Awana and is working hard in that book as well.  I'm happy about that because so far I'm feeling like we could use a little more Bible time.  It could be because we're only on week 9 of Adventures but I'm not sure yet.  I've been thinking of adding here but I'll decide over break.  We're just going to finish up another week or two and then move into Christmas fun.

I read this post yesterday and have been thinking about what you said about there not being enough Bible. This curriculum is written to be Bible centered, but I agree that it needs more sometimes to drive it home. I was just thinking of some things we do or might start to do... One thing I do with my older child is make the Bible verse part of her handwriting practice (doing cursive/3rd grade). The last lesson we did I typed the verse in a large font size and changed the font style to "outline". This makes the letters hollow. I had her trace the Bible verse. This gave her another way to write the verse and get in some more "print" writing, so her print does not get sloppy. Even on the days that there is nothing scheduled for Bible time I think it would be niced to read the verses ... hmmm.. I don't feel like I am making sense here. LOL! Okay, I have the teacher's manual for week 8 in my lap. Day 1=Jesus the Rock (says to go out and stand on a rock... not an option here in TX really, so I brought in a large river rock and talked about unmovable it was). Day 2=Talking about Jesus the Rock and reading Bible verses and singing the song about it then, doing the memory verse (a lot on that day). Day 3=Memory verse copywork and handwriting practice (I think more could be discussed plus additional verses on this day). Day 4 Bible verse reading (I think the memory verse needs to be worked on everyday of the week). Day 5=nothing... Day 6... nothing... Sunday... church. I think I am thinking the same thing you are. I think Bible should be everyday and with more emphasis. I think it is just something we will have to modify ourselves, though. Another thing is that I have heard a lot about a curriculum called Heart of Dakota... You might want to look at it. I think it may be more Bible based, but it might not be at all the kind of fit for our type families that MFW is. I don't know. I am keeping my options open, but I plan to start changing the Bible somewhat to add more depth to it.

As far as how far along you are in the lesson... I looked ahead to Lesson 18 and it does not seem to change. On Day 1=Present the Lamb of God verses, talk about it, discuss and say memory verse and do a craft. Day 2=same as day 1. Day 3 Copy memory verse. Day 4=color and do "badge" for poster. I think that day 3, 4, & 5 need more to it. Maybe that can be acheived by having the kids do some of the assigned verses for copywork or maybe some art (draw the verse) or through writing (about what the verses mean to them) or having them tell someone else about the verses they are learning (public speaking to grandma, etc... ;) ) Or maybe they could read more of the verses in that chapter of the Bible.

Just my thoughts....

I would love to know what the state shoe boxes are? Is there a place to sign up to get these?
