Day 224 - earthworm niche activity

Today's science lesson waited until after daddy got home from work.   You see, we have been discussing niches and the factors that determine an animal's niche.  Our activity was to create an earthworm niche so I'm sure now you can understand why I waited.  I personally don't think I could have modeled such a level of comfort with these little guys.  Ken had no problems with the worms and neither did the girls.  Well, for the most part.
Instead of digging in the yard for worms, Ken purchased some at Walmart.  I know that was an easy way out but I just didn't have it in me to dig them up.

This really shocked me!  I never in a million years thought Caroline would touch the worms.  Again, I was so glad that Ken led this.  The girls kept saying that the worms were SO cute.  Well, until Claire actually touched one, then.....

Poor Claire.  She wasn't enjoying the cute worms anymore.  Calista worked hard to make her feel comfortable once again.   She's thinking about it......

The whole activity ended well with everyone loving the worms.  They wanted to play with them but we eventually got all 20 worms into 2 jars.  Now to see what they do.

What a fun activity. Nice of Dad to pitch in so Mom didn't have to do all the touching!

Looks like we are going to be right behind you again this year. It will be cool to see the things you all do before we do them. We had planned to start 1st grade in June, but with my hubby home it just did not happen. I changed plans rather than have a stressful time with school. Anyway, my kids looooooovvvee worms, so we are going to have fun with this one.

Oh, I really hope yours do what they're supposed to! Mine - well, you can read what happened to them at http://tinahollenbeck.blogspot.com/2010/08/weekly-wrap-up-10-one-with-suicidal.html - and I've heard some other not-so-successful stories with this same experiment this year. I'll be thrilled if I hear your worms do what they're supposed to! :^)

You are moving right along. I hope our year has a great beginning like yours (we're starting Sept. 1).

We started first grade last March or April and liked the worm experiment. Lucky for us, it was Spring so we had lots of worms crawling in the wet ground. It worked out perfect.

Seeing what you're doing is making me anxious to get started!
